Community Matters
Resident Council
The Resident Council was organized to represent Oaknoll residents in achieving objectives of their common interests and to serve as liaison between the resident body, the Administration, and the Board of Directors in matters concerning the welfare, safety and comfort of the residents. It also promotes resident participation in the activities available in our community.
The Council is made up of elected representatives and meets monthly with the Oaknoll administrative staff. Twice yearly meetings with residents are held to discuss current issues, introduce new residents and new staff and to hold a memorial service for residents who have passed away since the last meeting.
History
Over 50 Years of Service
1966
Oaknoll opened its doors to the Iowa City community with a dream of providing a safe living environment for retired residents with the guarantee of nursing care when needed. In the beginning Oaknoll offered one and two bedroom apartments (ranging in size from 380 to 670 square feet) with a bath and kitchenette and a 48 bed health center licensed for skilled and intermediate care.
1983
The Benton Street building added 28 two and three bedroom apartments (ranging in size from 865 to 1,200 square feet) to the existing structure.
1993
The health center was renovated and nine more two and three bedroom apartments (ranging in size from 600 to 1,200 square feet) were added. This expansion is also known as the Oakcrest addition.
1998
Oaknoll opened the new Benton Street East addition. This addition offers deluxe two bedroom apartment homes (ranging in size from 960 to 1,100 square feet).
2000
The Oaknoll Assisted Living area welcomed its first residents. Twenty-one apartments were added (ranging in size from 379 to 750 square feet) and certified by the Department Inspection and Appeals for residents who can maintain a somewhat independent lifestyle but may need extra assistance with bathing, dressing, taking medicine, or maintaining daily routines.
2004
The new Health Center building was completed. We continue to be licensed for skilled and intermediate nursing care to address the physical needs of our residents within a home-like atmosphere. Here, our residents enjoy the companionship of family, friends and visitors, of pets and children, and of our staff. Spontaneous activity and planned programs make days interesting. A sunny courtyard provides a place to garden, hear birds, and delight in the fragrances of the out-of-doors.
2006
Oaknoll opened the George Street addition which reflects the active lifestyles of our residents who know the benefits of living in a LifeCare Community. Whether you prefer a 950 or 1,080 square foot unit with or without a screened-in porch, a 1,335 square foot unit with a sunroom, or a most spacious 1,672 square foot unit with a screened-in porch, Oaknoll has an apartment for you. This addition also featured a hair salon and spa, a movie theater, the Oak Dining Room and an Internet Café with patio seating.
2013
Oaknoll purchased 30 acres of land off Kitty Lee Road in Iowa City for a future second campus.
2015
Oaknoll completed its Spring Street addition including 70 independent living apartments and an outdoor courtyard with a water fountain. The building also houses the Third on Third Bistro cafe, Mixers on Fifth pub lounge and a multipurpose Community Room.
2016
Patricia Heiden retires as executive director. Steve Roe appointed new executive director. Oaknoll celebrates its 50th Anniversary. The grand opening of Oaknoll Short Stay Unit (SSU). The Short Stay Unit is for those 62+ in age. It is an extension of our licensed Health Center with nursing staff trained for skilled and intermediate care. This comfortable unit has 10 individual rooms, each with its own bathroom and shower--providing a private space for residents to heal and return home quickly. This unit is available for residents who have scheduled surgery or an unexpected health condition, and they are in need of short term rehabilitation. Oaknoll’s Short Stay Unit helps residents get back to their normal routine.
2020
The Oaknoll East Campus is established.
2025
In July 2025 twelve more health center beds were added to the Oaknoll campus in a home called 1201. The home is located across the street from the main campus building.
2026
In September 2026 Oaknoll will celebrate 60 years of LifeCare services to the greater Iowa City community.
